Coffee production, as in other crops, could be affected by the strong impacts associated with future climate change, including the frequency increase of extreme environmental events, such as heat waves, flooding and long-term drought episodes. Within some limits, plants have developed mechanisms to cope with such environmental constraints, as the development of vigorous and deep root systems to improve the access to soil water resources. Therefore, studies related to morphology and physiology of the shoot and root system, and the relationship between them, become increasingly important. In this context, this study aims at to evaluate the growth characteristics of the shoot and root system, the root hydraulic conductance and the leaf gas exchange in different Coffea canephora genotypes. Seedlings obtained by rooting cuttings were used and transplanted into PVC tubes (1.0 m high; 0.2 m diameter) after the development of the fourth leaf pair. A randomized block design implemented, considering four genotypes (A1, 3V, 14 and 19) and six replicates of one plant each, with a total of 24 experimental units (plants). Three months after transplantation, plant growth (plant height, leaf area, leaf number, stem diameter and growth rate of the root system) and leaf gas exchange analyzes were performed. The hydraulic conductivity of the root system of the studied genotypes was also determined using a pressure chamber. The genotype 14 presented lower efficiency in the conversion of C-assimilated into shoot growth than genotype 3V. In addition, genotype 3V showed higher daily root growth rate in depth than genotype 14 and root hydraulic conductivity (KR,RAS) higher than genotype 19. It was found that genotypes with higher hydraulic conductivity of the root system showed higher shoot growth. The consumer market has a strong tendency to consume specialty coffees, making it essential to understand the influence of environmental conditions, such as solar radiation and altitude, on coffee quality. This study aimed to analyze the physical and sensory quality of Arabica coffee as a function of different altitudes and incident solar radiation on the coffee tree. The study was carried out in the city of Manhuaçu-MG, Brazil. Three altitudes (950, 1050 and 1150 m above mean sea level) and two sides of coffee exposure to solar radiation (east face: morning sun and west face: afternoon sun) were studied in two post-harvest processing (natural and peeled cherry). Sensory attributes, granulometry and occurrence of coffee defects were evaluated, in order to verify if there was variation in the physical and sensorial characteristics of the coffee. It was found that at an altitude of 1150mamsl, on the exposed face of the plant that received the afternoon sun, there was the formation of better-quality coffee, when compared to the face that received the morning sun. On the other hand, at lower altitudes, coffees from the face of the plant exposed to the morning sun showed a greater association with physical and sensory quality parameters. |
